Let them know it’s Christmas time…

Unbelievably and inexplicably - it is December, and the jolly one flies in just 23 days! How this happened is totally beyond me. I swear I was just working on budgets and projections for 2009, which is now apparently over. If you know where it went, please let me know…

I am fully recovered from an exciting Thanksgiving Weekend open house a the winery, where we saw our biggest crowds ever over the three day event. Thanks to all our customers old and new for making it a festive and fun three days. As you may have figured out by now, there’s nothing I like more than to talk about wine for a few hours on end!

While singing carols with Martha & Pirrie in the car on the way back from Carlton Sunday night, I was reminded of the classic 1984 charity single “Feed the World” by a group of the then most popular artists in England, who joined together under the moniker of Band-Aid for the single. (Sting, Phil Collins, Bono, George Michael, Duran Duran, Bob Geldof, Paul Weller, Paul Young were among the participants.) In late November of 1984, I was the afternoon DJ at New York’s #1 rated radio station Z-100FM, and at the time I had the largest audience of any DJ in America. I was close with the guys in Duran Duran back then (i was briefly known as the “6th Duran”)- and remember getting the call that they wanted to premier “Feed the World” on my show in New York, and in fact have us hook up to a satellite feed and do the official world premiere. It was November 29th, 1984 - and I remember being thrilled and honored to host the special show and play the record for the first time. It went on to become the biggest-selling record of all time in the UK, and stayed at #1 for five weeks, as i recall.

The record raised funds to help feed the Ethopians, who were fighting a terrible famine and literally dying of starvation. The problem of hunger continues, sadly, here at home as well as abroad. At our Portland tasting and sales event on Friday night, we’ll be raising funds for the Oregon Food Bank, to help feed those right here in our own community who need our help. Thanks in advance for joining us!
